Atlantic Canada Black Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Program

The Black Business Initiative (BBI) is excited to have been selected to be the delivery organization for the objectives of the Black Entrepreneurship Program (BEP) Ecosystem in Atlantic Canada, specifically to strengthen and broaden existing support for Black businesses and entrepreneurs in Nova Scotia, and expand services and programs to all Atlantic Canadian provinces.

In the next few months, we will be developing new business programs and services to support Black businesses and youth in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island, with the aim of being able to provide similar supports that are available in Nova Scotia. We expect to work extensively with community and service provider organizations on the ground to achieve this goal. While the funding is for a three-year period, we expect to continue providing support beyond that time.

Existing Support for Businesses in Nova Scotia

Below are the list of the business support programs and services that are currently available for Black businesses in Nova Scotia.

  • Business development support, including counseling, advising, and access to information and resources and mentorship opportunities.
  • Entrepreneurial development and business skills training.
  • Access to funding, procurement and supply chains, and scaling opportunities.
  • Communication, marketing, and promotion strategies for businesses.
  • Youth entrepreneurship programming through Business Is Jammin’.

We expect to be able to offer similar programs and services in all regions within the next 12 months. The new programs and services will be developed in consultation with stakeholders in the region, including existing and aspiring businesses owners. This is to ensure that the solutions are locally relevant. We also expect to have Entrepreneurship Engagement Managers (EEMs) in major centres of the provinces to work directly with clients.

Anticipated Timeline

The availability of support in each region will vary based on the specific program or service as well as our ability to set up the structures on the ground. The tentative high-level timeline of the project is as follows:

  • Approval and funding (July 2021)
  • Start-Up Planning & Program Development (First 6 months).
    • Community Engagement
    • Consultations & Needs Assessments
    • Partnerships & Collaborations
    • Program and service design
    • Marketing and Awareness (Month 5 – ongoing)
    • Communication, website, etc. (Month 2 – ongoing)
    • Launching of Regional Offices (up to 12)
    • Full delivery of programs and services (up to 12)

A very limited number of programs and supports may be available to businesses in all regions by Fall 2021. Information on this page will be updated.
