We are well-known for our Training Department. We provide free business and professional development opportunities to Black and racialized entrepreneurs and employees. These programs are strategically selected to accommodate the market trends and our clients’ needs to help build the skills, knowledge, and confidence of our participants. Training offerings are delivered through 11-week programs, workshops, webinars, conferences, business consultations, and more.

Our Training Department provides a variety of learning opportunities throughout the year. These activities engage and support our clients’ business growth, professional networks, leadership, and skills. Some of these training opportunities include workshops and lunch & learns co-hosted with partners who have expertise on various business topics. We subsidize costs or—thanks to the generosity of our partners—provide tickets to educational and empowering conferences or networking events.

New Program: Boost

Boost is a new program, created in partnership with Volta and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency that will support the growth and development of Black and Indigenous entrepreneurs in Atlantic Canada. We encourage and welcome applications from all Black and Indigenous founders; however, given the need to increase representation within the sector, preference will be given to applicants who identify as women and/or members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

With dedicated space to grow their skills and build out their business idea over a 16-week period, the Boost cohort will participate in expert-led, intensive training sessions each week focusing on subjects such as:

    • leadership
    • branding
    • the Lean Business Model Canvas
    • Customer discovery and validation
    • brainstorming and creating a minimum viable product (MVP) using design thinking methodologies
    • how to pitch, and much more.

The program will include weekly training sessions, facilitated by leading experts, and participants will have access to a working lab, located inside of Volta’s Co-Working Space, that will provide a dedicated space to apply their learnings and develop their business or idea. They also will receive an honorarium for their participation.

Program facilitators and advisors will also be available each week to answer any questions and help tackle any obstacles participants may face through office hours.

Applications for the program open on Friday, January 22 and close at 11:59pm on Sunday, February 21, 2021. Follow the link below to complete an application.

I think the most powerful thing to do is to help someone know themselves or their paths. This course helped me shift my perspective and analyze my audience, website, and other topics related to online marketing. Thank you to the Black Business Initiative.” - Zainab Al-Habi
Being involved in the Customer Relationship Management course has made me more attentive to our customer needs. This has improved acquisition and retention of clients. Having the opportunity to continue my education as an entrepreneur is imperative for growth in my business. Without the courses held by BBI this would not be possible for me.” - Dennis Mbeba, Delectable Desserts Inc.
“I participated in the Foundations for Success course. I received much more out of this experience than I was expecting! The most valuable thing for me was learning how to use new marketing tools which has really helped my business reach more people. I also loved having the opportunity to learn and network with other local black business owners. The instructor was very fun and engaging - I especially enjoyed when he would share his personal business successes and failures. It has inspired me to see all of the talent and creativity from the other entrepreneurs in our community. I look forward to taking more classes with BBI and would recommend them to anyone starting or looking to enhance their business!” - Fantanesh Attomsa, Blue Nile Massage & Wellness
