The Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Board (NSAA) has received an application to designate Black Beauty Culture Hair Innovator (natural hair care) as a voluntary trade. This includes hair services such as braids, weaves, knots, and locs.

The application was reviewed by a Trade Advisory Committee composed of individuals who are involved in this work. We are at the consultation stage and would like to hear from people of African and Indigenous descent, as well as hairstyling professionals and educators.

The Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency (NSAA) and the Department of Labour and Advanced Education (LAE) invite you to help determine if there is support for Black Beauty Culture Hair Innovator Trade to become a voluntary trade with a training pathway for certification. We also want your input on how to enhance the understanding that natural hair care services are not regulated under the Cosmetology Act.

The community and industry/stakeholder consultations are hosted by BBI. The community sessions are organized by region: Northern, Halifax and Central, Southern and are open to individuals from all communities in Nova Scotia.

Northern: Pictou County, Guysborough County, Antigonish County, New Glasgow, Cape Breton.

Central: Cumberland County, Colchester County, Hants County, Truro.

South: Kings County, Lunenburg County, Queens County, Shelburne County, Yarmouth County, Digby County, Annapolis County, Kentville, Wolfville.

Metro: Halifax, Dartmouth, Cherrybrook, Beechville, Hammonds Plains/Lucasville, East and North Preston, Sackville.

Please register to join us for the virtual consultations. We value and welcome your opinion.
