The Black Business Initiative (BBI) is a province-wide business development initiative committed to fostering the growth of businesses owned by members of the Nova Scotia Black Community. The BBI focuses on supporting business starts, growth and business attraction to Nova Scotia with a priority on Black owned firms to improve productivity, investment in strategic innovations, and enhanced regional and global competitiveness.
We are currently hiring for several positions. The successful candidate(s) will be familiar with the African Nova Scotian community and/or have a willingness to appreciate, understand, and regularly engage with the African Nova Scotian community. Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as a team member are a must.

TRAINING & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

 

Position Profile: 

Reporting to the Director, of Entrepreneurship; the Training & Communications Manager will plan, organize, and assist in the development and administration of all entrepreneurial education policies and programs. Through networking, strategic alliances and/or internal development, the Training & Communications Manager manages the educational activities of the clients of BBI and Business is Jammin’ (BIJ) and their associated entities. The Manager will support the work of the Director, Stakeholder & Community Relations to deliver the BBI Composite Group Communications Plan.

 

Qualifications and Key Competencies: 

The minimum qualifications required to perform the job include a university degree in business administration, commerce, (or related field), bachelor’s degree in communications and or public relations, education or a certificate, diploma, or degree in adult education; 2-3 years of experience in business development and/or experience with creating social media campaigns and website management; and a valid Nova Scotian driver’s license.

ACCOUNTING ASSISTANT

 

Position Profile: 

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Services, the Accounting Assistant is primarily responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, and tracking and reporting of expenses while maintaining BBI composite financial records. The incumbent is also responsible for database and information management in which a variety of information is regularly collected to prepare statistical and data analysis reports. The ideal candidate will also provide general accounting and daily administrative operations to support the accounting department.

 

Qualifications and Key Competencies: 

The minimum qualifications required to perform this role include post-secondary training in business administration; intermediate knowledge of MS Excel, Word, and database management; and a sound knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, as well as organizational and internal controls. The successful candidate will also have the following required skills: the ability to communicate effectively and write fluently in English; an ability to prioritize and organize tasks whilst performing in a fast-paced work environment; good organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality; experience using Sage ACCPAC for Windows; be a team player and demonstrate a high degree of initiative and a positive attitude.

ENTREPRENEURIAL ENGAGEMENT MANAGER (EEM)

 

Position Profile: 

Reporting to the Director, Entrepreneurship, the Entrepreneurship Engagement Manager will act as a point of contact between the Black Business Initiative and its clients and will be responsible for delivering BBI’s programs. In addition to working with clients in the preparation and development of business plans, the EEM will assist clients in accessing business funding and implementing their business plan(s). The EEM will act as an account manager and manage client performance through the various stages of entrepreneurial development. As the main point of contact in their designated region, the EEM will oversee business development across the assigned client group.

 

Qualifications and Key Competencies: 

The minimum qualifications required to perform this role include; a university degree or college diploma in business administration, commerce, economics, finance, marketing, or a related field; at least 2-3 years’ experience within the financial, commercial lending industry, or government sectors, or similar organization; and a valid Nova Scotian driver’s license with ability to travel throughout the province as required. Strong relationship building skills; a strong customer/client focus; excellent analytical skills; strong computer skills.
