Black Business Community Investment Fund

 

We are now open for Business!!

The RRSP season is underway and so is the sale of shares in our Black Business Community Investment Fund. We are open for business till February 29, 2012.

Over the last seven years, we have raised a total of $555,500 from 99 investors. After adjusting for redemptions, the capital base is currently $535,000 with 93 investors.

To date we have invested a total of $1.02 Million. This represents 13 different investments in 7 different companies. Last year we paid our first dividend of 1.5% to shareholders. This offering would enable us continue to build on these successes.

Investing in the Fund is excellent for you, excellent for the business community, and excellent for the tax return!

The Black Business Community Investment Fund Limited (BBCIFL or the Fund) was created in 2001 to provide an investment opportunity within Nova Scotia and manage investment funds. This Fund is a pool of capital raised in the community through the sale of shares. The capital raised is invested as equity and subordinated debt in new or existing Black-owned businesses.

Ultimately, this Fund should increase the level of economic activity and prosperity within the Nova Scotia Black-owned business community.

Over the past eight years, the Black Business Initiative (BBI) has received generous support from several investors. After seven share offerings, our portfolio value is $535,000 and our total shareholder base currently stands at 92 people.

Shareholder

There are many advantages to becoming an investor in the BBCIFL including:

  • Tax credit - You'll receive up to 65% (35% immediately) back on your investment up to an annual maximum of $17,500 on a $50,000 investment, even with cash already in your RRSP.
  • Investing in your community - You're investing in the community in which you live and work, helping to strengthen and diversify the local business environment.
  • Long-term return - Over the longer term, you'll receive a return on investment based on the performance of the ventures in which the fund invests.

 

Annual General Meeting

The Fund holds annual shareholders meetings. The seventh Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at the Casino Nova Scotia Hotel in Halifax, NS on Thursday, June 16, 2011at 5:30 pm.

To date, the Fund has made the following investments in local companies:

  • 13 different investments in 7 Black-owned businesses
  • 4 equity investments
  • 8 subordinate debt investments with an average annual ROI of 10%
  • Total of $1.02 million invested
  • 1.5% Dividend paid out in 2011
  • Businesses in Arts & Entertainment, Construction and Environmental sectors
