The BBI Logo

A Brief History

BBI Logo - Orignal Sketch

Some of the most frequently asked questions about BBI are regarding our logo. What is it? What does it mean? Where is it from?

Before we answer those questions we would like to give the reader a little background on how we came to choose the logo that is so easily recognizable today.

A newspaper article published during African Heritage Month 1993 included a two-page spread on Nova Scotia's Black Heritage. The Black Cultural Centre provided the information in the article. Six African symbols made up the border of the page.

When the BBI was searching for a logo that would reflect the mission, vision and principles of the organization, these six symbols were considered. We now use four of the symbols as part of our brand, but the DWANIMEN is the symbol that comprises our logo. The DWANIMEN is a Ghanaian symbol of strength, the Ram's Horns.

The above orignal sketch was first presented to the Board of Directors. By adding a second DWANIMEN at a right angle and incorporating yellow, green, red and black (prevailing colours of African nation's flags) the BBI Logo was born.
